Lake Pontchartrain
Lake Pontchartrain is the second largest salt-water lake in the U.S. It was originally named Okwata by the Indians, which means “wide water.” In 1699, the French explorer, Iberville, renamed it “Pontchartrain” after the name of the French Minister of the Marine.
The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway was built in the 1950’s and 1960’s to connect the north and south shores of the lake. This bridge is the longest bridge in the world.
