Haunted Houses
New Orleans is home to several haunted houses. One of the most famous, or infamous, is the LaLaurie House. Located on Royal St. in the French Quarter, it was the home of the very wealthy and socially prominent couple, Monsieur and Madame LaLaurie. Madame LaLaurie was intelligent and beautiful, but she was also cold-blooded, and also a little bit insane.
Madame LaLaurie once chased a slave child with a whip onto the roof of the house, where the child jumped to her death. To this day, people have witnessed a ghostly figure of a child jumping to her death.
Madame also kept her cook chained to the oven and treated her brutally. One night, while the LaLauries were out, the cook set fire to the kitchen, thinking it would be better to be dead than endure life any more. When the neighbors came to help put the fire out, they found in the attic slaves chained to the walls, with body parts scattered around. The slaves were taken to a hospital and cared for. When the LaLauries came home and realized that their secret was out, they fled New Orleans and were never seen again.
