To the left of St. Louis Cathedral is the Cabildo. This building was built after the Great Fire of 1788 and was used as a City Hall and Supreme Court building until 1899. It was in this building that the papers for the Louisiana Purchase were signed in 1803. Also, the famous case of Plessy vs. Ferguson was heard here. Today it serves as a museum of New Orleans history.
